Artists

Kathrine Ærtebjerg graduated from the The Royal Danish Art Academy in 2002 and since then has received much national recognition in her home country of Denmark. More often than not a female protagonist is present within a fantastical landscape which can include oversized animals, morphed nonhuman silhouettes and unrecognisable flowers and foliage. These scenes strike the viewer as being similar to a dream sequences which is heightened by the scale distortions and inclusion of abstract, geometric forms. But also by the artist’s application of paint, often applied by hand or with cloths and rags, the artist achieves sensual marks which sit alongside fine, delicate brush work. In the same breath the artist denies any definate narrative resulting in paintings which though formally complex and deftly painted seem to represent a childlike mentality to organising life and comprehending reality, as well as offering a wonderful means of escapism.

This is not a pen

This is Not a Pen is an ongoing series of float pen commissions.

The first float pen was produced in the early 1950s and continue to be manufactured by Eskesen, a company located outside Copenhagen, Kathrine Ærtebjerg's home town.

Kathrine Ærtebjerg was invited to design one of the first three pens that have been created. These pens, each in a Special Launch Edition box, were presented for the first time during the Frieze Art Fair.
